FIRST OF ALL, TOLERANCE – A Student from Another Country: Challenges
This audio material – illustrated with posters from the workshops – is a conversation about the challenges faced by a new student in class. Children talk about language barriers, lack of peer contact, name-calling, pushing, and acts of violence they experienced or witnessed. Based on these stories, scenes were selected for further work in the workshops.

FIRST OF ALL, TOLERANCE – Children’s Voices
Children participating in the workshops talk about themselves: what language they speak at home, what language they dream in, and what is difficult for them in their new school. They answer from their perspective the question: What does a student from another country need? Their responses invite us to consider how we can help children unfamiliar with our schools and language. Basic phrases in the children’s languages invite us to learn a few simple words in other languages.

One problem, many perspectives. Children talk about how they feel at school when a problem arises and what they think teachers could do. What is the perspective of the parents? Do teachers see these problems differently?

Let’s listen to the children and learn about their needs in their new school. What do new students need from teachers? What would their ideal first day at a new school look like? What could help them feel more comfortable in a new environment? Let’s try to plan actions to support new students at school.
